Did You Know: 10 Facts about a Dromedary

1.Camels can run at up to 65 km/h (40 mph) in short bursts and sustain speeds of up to 40 km/h (25 mph).

2.The dromedary is the largest camel after the Bactrian camel

3.The palate, which is often mistaken for the tongue, dangles from one side of the mouth and is used to attract females during the mating season

4.In winter, even desert plants may hold enough moisture to allow a camel to live without water for several weeks. ... Other adaptations help dromedaries thrive in desert conditions. Their nostrils close to keep sand at bay, and they have bushy eyebrows and two rows of long eyelashes to protect their eyes.

5.Unlike many other animals, camels move both legs on one side of the body at the same time.

6.When camels do refill, however, they soak up water like a sponge. A very thirsty animal can drink 30 gallons (135 liters) of water in only 13 minutes.

7.Big, thick footpads help them navigate the rough rocky terrain and shifting desert sands.

8.Camels are herbivorous and are specifically adapted to consume cactus and other thorny plants. Their mouths contain a leathery lining that protects the inside from damage. They also eat plants that do not contain thorns, such as willow and poplar.

9.Whatever the case, with large, repugnant sacks hanging out of their mouths, male dromedaries begin the courtship. Using their spit to make a low gurgling sound that results in foaming at the mouth, they also mark their territory by rubbing their necks (where they have poll glands that produce a foul, brown goo) anywhere they can, and even pee on their own tails to attract a lady with their urine’s female-attracting pheromones“.

10.A dominant male (male camels become mature at about six years)

Here are some Scriptures that also tells us about Dromedaries and what we are allowed to do as well as what not do with this Animal:

Lev.11:4 This proves we are not to eat them

Gen.24:61 In the present and the past we rode camels

Mark 6:1 This proves that we wore camel hair and still today

Matthew19:2 This scripture proves camels are flexible and obedient to there owner we can learn from them.
